Inlays and Onlays in Orangeville
Composite fillings are used to treat small cavities that have developed in the teeth. However, when the teeth have more extensive damage or decay, your dentist will use a type of filling known as an inlay or onlay.
What Is the Difference Between an Inlay and an Onlay?
When the decay lies in between the two cusps of the tooth, an inlay will be used to fill the space. However, when only one cusp of the tooth is affected, an onlay is used instead. Unlike dental fillings that are created during the filling treatment, inlays and onlays must be fabricated in the dental lab.
Do I Need an Onlay Or a Crown?
The decision on whether to use an onlay or a crown depends on the extent of damage to the tooth. When smaller areas of decay are present on the cusp of the tooth, an onlay will be sufficient. However, if a significant portion of the tooth is affected, a crown will be used to restore the tooth.
